The physical structure of how rappers deliver their lyrics, known as flow, has evolved dramatically. Researchers analyzing a digital corpus of rap transcriptions called MCFlow documented this shift. They studied hundreds of verses from dozens of popular artists. Their findings show a clear historical trend. Over two decades, rappers began packing more rhymes into their bars and using much more varied phrase lengths. This shows that the art form became technically more complex over time, turning the microphone into a highly sophisticated rhythmic instrument.
