Founded in 1107 by Roger Bigod, Thetford Priory quickly became one of the largest and most influential Cluniac houses in England. The Cluniac order, known for its strict adherence to Benedictine rule and centralized structure, played a pivotal role in medieval European monasticism. For over four centuries, the priory flourished, accumulating wealth, land, and cultural significance in East Anglia. Its eventual demise came during the tumultuous period of the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII, when monastic institutions across England were suppressed, their assets seized by the Crown, and their buildings often left to ruin or repurposed.
