Stanley Milgram's 1960s 'small world experiment' provided early evidence supporting the six degrees of separation idea.

Milgram sent packages to random people asking them to forward the package to a stranger in Boston, but only through people they knew personally. Although many packages didn't reach the target, those that did took about six steps on average. This experiment showed that people are connected through surprisingly short social chains.
