From: Why Little Brains Forget: Understanding Your Child's Memory Lapses

The parts of a child's brain responsible for memory and organization are still developing.

90% confidence

Think of a child's brain like a house still under construction. The 'control center' for memory, called the prefrontal cortex, and a key memory-forming area, the hippocampus, are not yet fully built and connected. These areas are crucial for things like working memory (holding information in mind for a short time), planning, and keeping track of tasks. Because these connections are still strengthening, it's harder for children to hold onto information or remember sequences of events compared to adults. This development continues well into their teenage years and even early adulthood. So, what might seem like simple forgetfulness is often just a reflection of their brain doing its important work of growing and maturing, piece by piece.
