From a military history standpoint, the Battle of Puebla was a temporary win. General Zaragoza died of an illness just a few months after his victory. Soon after, France sent a much larger army, won the second battle, and occupied Mexico City. However, the initial victory proved that a determined, smaller force could stand up to a global superpower.
