From a historical perspective, the interaction between SCLC and SNCC in Atlanta is seen as a classic example of radical flank effects. SNCC functioned as the radical flank, pushing boundaries with direct action, sit-ins, and ultimately, a turn toward Black Power. This radicalism made the SCLC's demands for integration and voting rights appear highly moderate, reasonable, and palatable to the white political establishment, thereby accelerating legislative achievements.
